Alfa Romeo Alfetta Gtv – 2.0 tuned twinspark

There is a very good reason the Alfetta GTV feels different from most other cars of its era.
It was engineered around one simple idea: getting the weight in the right places.
The Alfetta was one of Alfa Romeo’s most technically ambitious road cars of its time, using a transaxle layout with the gearbox mounted at the rear. By moving the transmission to the rear axle, Alfa Romeo achieved an exceptionally well-balanced distribution of weight between the front and rear of the car.
And you can feel it.
The front end remains light and precise, while the rear-mounted transaxle helps give the car a remarkable sense of balance through corners. It is an engineering solution that makes the Alfetta GTV much more than simply a pretty Italian coupé.
Then there is the shape.
Designed by Giorgio Giugiaro, the Alfetta GTV is a masterclass in Italian seventies design. A long bonnet, low roofline, short rear overhangs and beautifully clean proportions give it a presence that still looks right more than four decades later.
Giugiaro did not need excessive styling tricks. The proportions do all the work.
This particular GTV adds a distinctly rally-inspired character to that already sporting foundation.
Under the bonnet sits the 2.0 Twin Spark, equipped with electronic ignition, an open-air filter, a high-pressure fuel pump and a Microtec tuned ECU. The exhaust system has also been modified, allowing the engine to breathe more freely and giving the car a considerably more purposeful soundtrack.
The Microtec ECU has been tuned around the complete setup, while the high-pressure fuel pump provides the fuel delivery required by the upgraded engine configuration.
And then there is the interesting part.
With this setup, the car produces the same power as a standard GTV6, but the experience is completely different.
Instead of relying on the effortless torque and low-revving character of the V6, this 2.0 Twin Spark wants to be worked.
It is a high-revving, eager and responsive engine, the kind that rewards you for keeping your foot in it and allowing the revs to build. Where the GTV6 gives you that wonderful V6 punch, this Twin Spark gives you something rather more frantic and involving.
It feels lighter on its feet.
More eager.
More willing to chase the upper reaches of the rev counter.
To make sure that additional performance can also be brought back under control, the braking system has been upgraded with drilled brake discs, providing improved braking performance and a more purposeful appearance behind the wheels
Inside, however, the approach is deliberately subtle.
The car retains its original luxurious Alfetta GTV interior, which remains in beautiful condition. Rather than replacing the cabin with a stripped-out competition interior, the original character has been preserved.
There are, however, small details that hint at the car’s sporting intentions.
The Alfa Romeo Personal steering wheel immediately adds a period-correct sporting touch, while the removal of the headliner introduces a subtle lightweight, competition-inspired feeling to the cabin. It is not a full race-car conversion — and that is precisely the point.
The luxury and elegance of the original GTV remain, while small details remind you that this particular Alfa has a more sporting side.
The result is a cabin that feels authentic rather than artificially “rally converted”.
And that philosophy continues throughout the car.
Nothing has been done simply for the sake of looking aggressive. The rally character is there, but it remains understated. You notice it gradually — in the livery, cibie lights, the mechanical character and ultimately in the way the car drives.
A proper Italian driver’s car, elegant enough to appreciate at a standstill, but engineered to come alive when the road starts to twist. Now available at Gruppo Classics.
The car comes with a valid MOT, ready to be enjoyed on the road.
